March 6 – Milan’s San Siro Stadium’s days may be numbered. The iconic ground shared by AC and Inter Milan looks set to be demolished and replaced by a new stadium as early as 2023.
Italian press reports have said the two Milan clubs have agreed to build a €600 million stadium close to the current San Siro site.
The new stadium would have a capacity of 60,000 and would be the focus of a development that includes a 5,000-seat arena venue and a new shopping complex.
The San Siro has long failed to provide modern facilities for fans and the enhanced revenue opportunities that new venues provide for clubs. Last November AC Milan and Inter signed a memorandum of understanding committing them to work together on the renovation of the San Siro or build of a new stadium.
Plans for the new stadium have reportedly been agreed by AC Milan and local authorities with Inter still to formally add their approval. Both clubs will commit substantially to the building costs with naming rights expected to contribute €25 million.
The San Siro has been the home of AC Milan since 1926 and Inter since 1947. The new stadium will be modelled on New York’s MetLife Stadium.
“We’ll have the most beautiful stadium in the world,” said AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni, earlier this year. “We want Milan to have a great stadium and make Milan the capital of football.”
