April 2 – The second year of the Women’s International Champions Cup, the women’s version of the men’s International Champions Cup (ICC) organised by Relevent Sports, will be played as a four-team tournament in August at North Carolina Courage’s WakeMed Soccer Park.
Unlike the inaugural season, the second time out will be focussed purely on the competition between the teams and has dropped the training format of the previous year.
Teams competing will be North Carolina Courage, the current NWSL Shield and the NWSL Champions; France’s Olympique Lyonnais, the current UEFA Champions League holders; WSL champions Manchester City, and Spain’s Atletico Madrid, who broke the European record for attendance at a women’s football match with 60,739 spectators at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium last month.
To be played August 15-18, the tournament will come after the Women’s World Cup in France.
Please find below and attached the latest release from Manchester City announcing its women’s team are to return to the US this August for their 2019 pre-season tour, where they will be the only English team competing in the Women’s International Champions Cup (ICC).
Gavin Makel, Head of Women’s Football, Manchester City, said: “We are delighted to be taking part in the second Women’s International Champions Cup. Last year, the tournament offered the team great preparation for the season ahead, as well as an opportunity to connect with our growing fan base in America.
“With four elite teams taking part, the competition is even better this time around and we look forward to be a part of it once again.”
