April 2 – The German push into the Chinese market notched up another partnership with Bayern Munich signing a co-branded credit card deal with Industrial Bank of China (CIB).
Bayern and CIB will also host fan events in Beijing during major Bundesliga matches which this season will be more exciting than previous ones as the six times consecutive champions currently lie second in the Bundesliga at the time of the season they are usually close to being declared champions.
“CIB is one of the biggest banks in the world and like FC Bayern, stands for financial stability and reliability. This partnership underlines the strong appeal FC Bayern already enjoys in China and is another important step in expanding our brand and our network,” said Bayern executive board member, Jörg Wacker.
Bayern’s presence in China includes an office in Shanghai that opened in 2016 that has established a number of fan events and youth development programmes in the country, as well as organising Bayern’s pre-season tours.
CIB vice president, Chen Jinguang added: “For us, the cooperation between the CIB and FC Bayern is a symbol of the Chinese goal of further developing football and promoting cultural exchange between China and Germany.”
Last week the DFL, the German Football League, opened an office in Beijing to promote German football in China. In April the DFL will organize a ‘Bundesliga Legends Tour’ with Jurgen Klinsmann. Patrick Huber, with the DFL since 2007, will head the office. The new office is the latest addition to the DFL’s global network with operations in Singapore, New York and a partnership with IMG Reliance in India.
