August 22 – The Cypriot courts have imposed a four-month jail sentence on a fan who invaded the pitch during Anorthosis Famagusta’s Europa League match against Dila Gori of Georgia last month.

Anorthosis were kicked out of the competition by UEFA last week after the August 9 third qualifying round tie was called off at 82 minutes with the Georgian team leading 3-0.

UEFA also fined Anorthosis, who had won the first leg 1-0, €50,000(£40,000/$60,000) and ordered them to play their next three UEFA club competition matches behind closed doors.

The jailed fan was among a group of youths who swarmed on to the pitch to protest at the club’s feeble showing in Larnaca after they went 2-0 down and had midfielder Vincent Laban sent off.

Anorthosis were the first Cypriot team to qualify for the Champions League group stage in 2009.

Rivals APOEL Nicosia reached the quarterfinals last season in one of the great underdog stories.
