May 9 – Concacaf have unveiled details of their restructured 2020 Concacaf Women’s Under-17 Championship which will be played over three rounds by 32 nations.
The first-round qualifiers will be played between August 17-25 between the lowest ranked 16 teams who have entered the championship – previously the competition was played with regional qualifiers in the Caribbean and Central America and one final Championship.
Now qualifiers will progress to a final round group stage and then to a last-16 knockout format. The dates for the final rounds are still to be announced.
The new format is designed to give teams more top level competition and follows the new formats for Concacaf’s Under-20 and Under-17 men’s competitions.
The 16 teams in the qualifying round are: Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bonaire, Cayman Islands, Curacao, Dominica, Guyana, Honduras, Martinique, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines and US Virgin Islands.
Divided into four groups, the top team in each group will progress the next stage.
Concacaf will qualify three nations to the U17 World Cup.
The draw for the groups for the qualifying stage and group stage of the final competition will takes place today at Concacaf HQ in Miami.
The US are the current Conacaf U17 champions, having beaten Mexico 3-2 in the 2018 Final.
