August 26 – Santander has agreed a three-year deal to become the title sponsor of the Recopa Sudamericana, which pits the winner of South America’s two major continental club competitions against each other.
Each year the winner of the Copa Libertadores, South America’s Champions League, faces the victor of the Copa Sudamericana.
The Recopa has been running every year since 1988, and earlier this week Libertadores winners Santos of Brazil drew 0-0 away to Sudamericana champions Universidad de Chile in this year’s version.
Spanish bank Santander is heavily involved in the Latin American market and already sponsors the Copa Libertadores.
It also supported last year’s Copa America, hosted by Argentina, and enjoys an image rights deal with Brazilian star Neymar, who currently plays for Santos.
“This new sponsorship demonstrates once again the maximum involvement of Santander with the sport in Latin America,” the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) said in a statement.
Santander also has a heavy presence in Formula One motor racing.
