August 25 – Manchester United chief executive David Gill is set to stand for election for a seat on UEFA’s Executive Committee next year.

The 55-year-old (pictured) is looking to replace fellow Englishman Geoff Thompson, former chairman of the English Football Association (FA), on the top table of European football’s governing body when elections are held at the UEFA Congress in London next May.

Eight seats on the Executive Committee are up for grabs and the FA has nominated Gill as its candidate to succeed Thompson who is stepping down.

“The FA Board has agreed to nominate David Gill as its candidate for the upcoming UEFA Executive Committee membership election,” a statement confirmed.

Gill, who joined United in 1997 and became chief executive six years later, has played a prominent role with the European Club Association (ECA) and will give English football an even stronger voice than that offered by the low-key Thompson should he win a place in the corridors of power at UEFA.
