August 29 – Goran Tufegdžić, the coach of the Kuwait national football team, has been shot in the chest, allegedly by a neighbour, and admitted to intensive care in hospital in a serious condition.
The 40-year-old (pictured above) was injured in his homeland, Serbia, believed to be over a disputed plot of land by an elderly neighbour, according to pollce.
A man has since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Tufegdžić was transferred to hospital in Belgrade and, although still in a critical condition, is said to be responding well to treatment following an urgent operation to stem the bleeding from the wound, according to Abdulaziz Hamada, the Kuwait assistant manager.
“Thankfully the condition of coach Goran has improved,” Hamada was quoted as saying on the Kuwait national football team website.
Tufegdžić enjoyed a playing career with Serbian team Mladi Radnik and represented the Yugoslavia national team.
He has spent much of his coaching career in the Middle East and took over the Kuwait national team in 2009, winning the Gulf Cup the following year.
