September 7 – Goran Tufegdžić, the coach of the Kuwaiti national football team, has come out of a coma after being shot last month by a neighbour in his native Serbia.

Tufegdžić (pictured above) was shot allegedly over a disputed plot of land by an elderly neighbour, who was arrested on suspicion of murder.

The 40-year-old was taken to hospital in Belgrade for urgent treatment, and after over a week he is now awake and breathing again, the Serbian regional Branicevo football association told newspaper Večernje Novosti.

Tufegdžić underwent three operations after being transferred to Belgrade, where relatives and Kuwaiti officials have visited him, as well as being attended to by wife Lydia.

During his playing career he played for with Serbian team Mladi Radnik and represented the Yugoslavian national team.

Tufegdžić has since spent most of his career in the Middle East, taking over Kuwait in 2009 and winning the Gulf Cup with them in 2010.

The team has won 13 matches in total under his leadership and only lost four games.

Kuwait is no longer in the running to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil after finishing third in a preliminary group involving South Korea, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates.
