September 13 – Three doctors are being investigated for manslaughter in connection with the death of Italian player Piermario Morosini in a Serie B match earlier this year.
Morosini collapsed while playing on loan for Livorno against Pescara in April, and subsequently died as a result of an inherited heart disease.
Two club doctors, as well as the head of Pescara’s emergency service, are being investigated over their actions in the minutes that followed his collapse.
They were criticised for not using a defibrillator to attempt to revive the midfielder.
Although one was available, Pescara doctor Ernesto Sabatini, Manlio Porcellini from Livorno and the emergency service head at the stadium Vito Molfese did not attempt to revive the player using a defibrillator.
By contrast, just weeks earlier the Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba’s life was saved in part thanks to being treated promptly with a defibrillator on the pitch after he collapsed during a match against Tottenham Hotspur.
There was then a delay in getting the player to hospital because of a police car blocking an ambulance from arriving in the stadium.
The police car had to be broken into in order to clear the way for the ambulance to get to the pitch.
Valentina D’Agostino will be the prosecutor in Pescara analysing the evidence and documents related to the case as the investigation is set to be heard in the coming days.
