September 15 – Uruguayan forward Sebastián Abreu has served the one-match suspension handed to him by a Brazilian sports tribunal after provoking Flamengo supporters during a Brazilian league game.
Also known as “El Loco”, which means “the mad one”, Abreu (pictured) moved to Figueirense from Botafogo earlier this year.
After scoring for Figueirense against Flamengo, Abreu lifted his shirt to reveal another shirt bearing the emblem of Botafogo, the main rival of Flamengo.
The shirt also bore the emblem of Nacional, a team he used to play for in Uruguay.
Abreu kissed the Botafogo emblem, prompting a violent reaction from Flamengo supporters.
Rio de Janeiro outfits Flamengo and Botafogo enjoy a fierce rivalry, known as the “Clássico da Rivalidade”, which has intensified in recent times after a number of meetings in the final of the Campeonato Carioca, the local state championship.
Abreu served the one-match suspension from Figueirense’s clash with Cruzeiro as a result, but the punishment had little effect as the player was on international duty with Uruguay.
