Real Madrid buy their way into Spanish women’s league with CD Tacon takeover

June 25 – Amidst the hype of the Women’s World Cup, Real Madrid have disclosed plans to found a women’s team for the 2019/2020 season. The Spanish giant have reached an agreement with CD Tacon that will see them take the club over.

The acquisition would represent a shortcut to La Liga women’s football for Madrid and is a timely move with interest in the women’s game bound to spike in Spain following the performance of the national team and their narrow exit from France 2019 at the hand of favourites the USA yesterday.

Tacon gained promotion to the Spanish top flight last season. The deal is expected to be worth less than €500,000.

Madrid have toyed with the idea of establishing a women’s team for a number of years. The club had initially envisaged building a team from scratch, but that idea was discarded when Tacon were promoted. Real Madrid and Tacon have always enjoyed a good relationship.

Real Madrid are late comers to the Spanish women’s league. Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Sociedad, Athletic Club, Espanyol, Valencia, Sevilla, Real Betis and Levante all possess active women’s teams. Athletic Club, Levante, Valencia and Sevilla used the same formula of buying an existing women’s team to brand as their own team.

The entrance of Real into the women’s topflight is expected to bring more sponsorship and exposure to the league, and perhaps one day ‘Las Galacticas’ could match their male counterparts.
