October 2 – Dynamo Moscow’s new stadium may be reduced in size after it was not selected to stage FIFA World Cup matches in 2018.

The club was building a 45,000-seater stadium to comply with size requirements for World Cup games.

However, as Spartak Moscow won the right to share Moscow’s World Cup games with the Luzhniki Stadium, Dynamo will rethink their plans.

“We want to make the stadium in the Petrovsky Park [the VTB Arena, pictured top] more comfortable and perhaps the capacity will be reduced,” the stadium’s executive director Andrei Peregudov told R-Sport.

“The club doesn’t need 45,000 seats, 33,000 seats seems optimal to us.”

The stadium was dropped from the list as it is due to be finished later than Spartak’s new ground, and therefore less likely to be able to host games at the Confederations Cup in 2017.

FIFA announced the 11 host cities of the Russia 2018 World Cup on Saturday (September 29), with Yaroslavl and Krasnodar also missing out on the right to stage games during the tournament.
