October 6 – Puma has agreed a new partnership with French international and Manchester City left back Gaël Clichy, who will wear the brand’s evoSPEED 1FG boots.
The boot, designed to support manoeuvrability and agility, is ideally suited to a player like Clichy, renowned for his pace after being developed into one of the Premier League’s leading left backs during his time at former club Arsenal.
The boot (pictured top and bottom) is also worn by his teammates Sergio Agüero and Yaya Touré.
Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud, Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez and Schalke 04’s on loan Dutch winger Ibrahim Afellay are among the other leading international stars wearing the boot.
Clichy will now be a key asset for Puma’s football communications.
“I am glad to start this new partnership with Puma,” said Clichy.
“It is an exciting brand and my new boots are very comfortable, so I am confident to perform well wearing them during the upcoming season.
“With Yaya Touré and Sergio Agüero, two of my Manchester City teammates recently signing with Puma as well, and I am thrilled to be part of the Puma family.”
Clichy (pictured above, centre) wore the boot for the first time during last Wednesday’s (October 3) draw with Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
He was unable to prevent City being torn apart time and time again defensively by the German champions, who were somehow only leading 1-0 at the time he was substituted late on by Mario Balotelli.
Ironically, it was Balotelli who salvaged a point from the game that manager Roberto Mancini admitted they did not deserve.
Christian Voigt, senior head of global sports marketing at Puma said: “We are delighted to have signed this new contract with Gaël Clichy.
“That he is playing for the current Premier League champions Manchester City and is a key player in the French national team makes him another important asset in our global football portfolio.
“Gaël is an ambitious and determined footballer and will help us to strengthen our position in the football market.
“We are happy to have him onboard.”
