August 20 – Online betting firms are mopping up last minute club sponsorships as the European season kicks off with French bookmaker Betclic partnering with Poland’s Lechia Gdansk, and VfL Bochum 1848 of the 2. Bundesliga becoming the first German betting partner of Stockholm based operator LeoVegas.
Ekstraklasa club Lechia Gdansk is Betclic’s first club sponsorship in Poland and replaces Totolotek (the Polish subsidiary of German betting group Merkur Sportwetten) on the back of Lechia’s shirts.
Polish regulators have recently introduced a 12% turnover tax on all betting companies and require all licensed betting firms to maintain an active presence within the country in order to operate online gambling services.
According to SBC News, Betclic and Czech betting group Fortuna Entertainment are the only licensed international bookmakers in Poland. There are 15 licensed bookies by Poland’s Ministry of Finance.
Bartłomiej Płoskonka Betlic country manager for Poland said that the French betting group was seeking sports sponsorships to expand its profile, with “further advancements to be announced shortly”.
German entry
VfL Bochum 1848 of the 2. Bundesliga are the first German betting partner of Stockholm based operator LeoVegas in a two-year deal.
Hardy Eberle, LeoVegas’ country manager for Germany, said: “We are proud to accompany such an established club as VfL Bochum over the next two seasons. We look forward to actively supporting the association in its development.”
The deal adds to LeoVegas’ club portfolio that includes English Premier League club Norwich City and Championshio club Brentford. Christoph Wortmann, sales and marketing director of VfL Bochum, said: “We look forward to the partnership with LeoVegas Sport in the coming years. At the same time, we would also like to thank sportwetten.de for the cooperation last year.”
