November 2 – Police have launched an investigation into an apparent racist gesture by a fan who attended Chelsea’s League Cup win over Manchester United on Wednesday (October 31).
Pictures appear to show the man making a “monkey” gesture, apparently towards United striker Danny Welbeck.
“Police have received a complaint regarding alleged racist behaviour at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday,” read a Metropolitan Police statement.
“An investigation has been launched. There have been no arrests and enquiries continue.”
The incident, reigniting the racism row that has engulfed the European champions, comes just days after Chelsea accused referee Mark Clattenburg of using “inappropriate language” towards their midfielder John Mikel Obi in Sunday’s (October 28) stormy Premier League match against United, which the visitors won 3-2 after the home side finished with nine men.
Chelsea made a formal complaint to the Football Association (FA) against Clattenburg who has been stood down for this weekend’s fixtures.
Chelsea captain John Terry was recently banned for four matches after being found guilty of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand a year ago.
