September 2 – The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) will introduce new fair play rules that clubs will have to comply with from 2020, but sanctions for rule-breakers will only be enforced from 2023 onwards.

Earlier this year Rogerio Caboclo took charge of the CBF after he was elected unopposed as president in April 2018, with the backing of former CBF president Marco Polo Del Nero. In a bid to shake off the governing body’s tainted image, the finance lawyer and protege of Del Nero is introducing a slate of measures designed to further modernise and improve the CBF and the Brazilian game professionally.

The CBF will supervise the clubs’ spending and overall finances to ensure they maintain a financial balance. To help clubs adapt to a new commercial reality and not rush the process, sanctions will only be applied from 2023 onwards.

“The clubs will have to comply with fair play,” said the CBF director of registrations and transfers department. “But there will be no punishment in the first year. It is educational. We will would not succeed in changing the rules from one year to the next.”

The CBF will disclose further details about its fair play plans in the coming days.

Under Caboclo, whose election slogan was ‘transparency and efficiency’, state championships will be reduced by two rounds next season. Brazil have expressed interest in bidding for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
