November 6 – Manchester United have announced today, to mark Sir Alex Ferguson’s 26 years in charge of the club, that the statue of Britain’s most successful manager will be revealed at Old Trafford on November 23.
The unveiling will take place the day before United’s match with Queens Park Rangers, the opponents of the 70-year-old Scot’s first home match in charge at Old Trafford on November 22 1986.
The nine foot bronze depiction of the record breaking manager by renowned sculptor Philip Jackson, which was commissioned to mark Sir Alex’s quarter of a century in charge at the Premier League outfit, will be placed in a prominent position near the entrance to the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, renamed in his honour last year.
Sir Alex’s statue will take its place alongside the other two permanent sculptures already outside Old Trafford stadium – one of manager Sir Matt Busby overlooking the East Stand, and a second of “the United Trinity” of George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton.
The Club will also be unveiling new artwork and installations in the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand concourses that illustrate the manager’s achievements throughout his United career.
Sir Alex is Britain’s most successful club manager having led United to 12 Premier League titles, two European Cups, five FA Cups and four League Cups.
He was previously in charge of Scotland’s Aberdeen, taking them to the European Cup Winners Cup title in 1983 by beating Real Madrid in the final.
