SIGA focus on protection of minors in Portuguese hook-up; Doha Summit nears

September 6 – The Sport Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA) has signed a co-operation agreements with the Portuguese Players’ Union to focus on the promotion of sport integrity and enhance the protection of minors in football.

“The agreement covers a wide range of areas, with focus on the following priorities: sports’ positive values and social, educational and cultural role; Good governance, integrity and transparency in sport; and the development and protection of children and young people in and through sport,” said a SIGA press release.

At the signing, Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros (pictured left), CEO of SIGA, said: “I have witnessed the excellent contributions the Portuguese Players’ Union has made. Their new training centre is the result of a strong vision, a reformist spirit, an impetus to innovate, and a sense of service to both the community and the players. SIGA looks forward to working side by side with our new partner to promote Sport Integrity.”

Portugal is a major gateway for South American players – and Brazilians in particular – into the European leagues. Illegal trafficking of young players has become a key concern of football’s governing bodies.

Joaquim Evangelista (pictured right), President of the Portuguese Players’ Union said: “Today, when it comes to the fight for integrity and defending good practices in Sport, SIGA is a reference at the global level. Our actions in Portuguese football and at the International level have much to do with defending integrity, with the fight against match-fixing, defending equality, protecting minors, and the fight against illegal trafficking… And all these themes are substantiated in the agreement we just signed.”
