October 8 – FIFA has extended the term of the Normalisation Committee that oversees Ghanaian football.

FIFA imposed the Normalisation Committee (NC) after the ruling body dissolved the executive committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following allegations of bribery and corruption involving officials in a documentary by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Several Ghanaian referees and officials were alleged to have taken cash and gifts in exchange for fixing games in Ghana’s topflight. Accusations ran all the way to top and GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi, who was later banned for life by FIFA.

The governing body has now extended the time the Normalisation Committee will stay in charge until November. That will allow the Normalisation Committee time to oversee fresh presidential elections and the early weeks of a new leader at the GFA.

“The Bureau of the FIFA Council has extended the mandate of the GFA Normalisation Committee to enable the NC to supervise the upcoming GFA Elections,” the NC announced via the GFA website on Tuesday. “The second mandate of the Normalisation Committee expired on September 30, 2019. However, in view of the upcoming GFA elections, FIFA has extended the Normalisation Committee’s mandate up to November 17, 2019 to enable it to complete the process of electing a new President and Executive Committee.”

It is the second time the tenure of the Normalisation Committee, tasked to run the daily affairs of the GFA and its Executive Committee and with revising the statutes, has been extended. The GFA is set to elect a new president on October 25.
