October 25 – English football has started planning for the mid-season 2022 World Cup with the prospect of its top two divisions playing right up until nine days before the start of the tournament in Qatar.
English media report that a draft calendar is proposing the last round of top-tier matches would take place on November 12, with the tournament starting on November 21. The World Cup final will take place in Doha on December 18.
No dates have yet been confirmed though it is also being reported that the top flight could resume on Boxing Day 2022. If that were the case, it would mean a minimal lay-off for any players involved in the latter stages of the World Cup.
England’s mid-season winter break, which comes into effect for the first time this season, will be scrapped for the 2022-23 campaign because of the World Cup.
