November 30 – Scotland has reiterated its interest in playing a part in the 2020 European Championship finals after representatives attended a UEFA summit in Dublin.
UEFA President Michel Platini has proposed a pan-European tournament in what will be the 60th anniversary of the championship, suggesting 12 countries could stage matches.
Scotland has already expressed an interest in staging the finals with Wales and the Republic of Ireland in a tripartite arrangement but if this proves a non-starter it would also be keen for Glasgow to be among the cities chosen in any cross-border decision by UEFA, whose Executive Committee will discuss the idea on December 6.
Scottish Football Association (SFA) chiefs Stewart Regan and Campbell Ogilvie (pictured top, left and right) attended the meeting in Dublin with a number of other federations following similar talks in Brussels.
“Platini’s proposal is for 13 cities as opposed to one or two countries, or three in the case of Scotland, Ireland and Wales, which was our suggestion earlier in the year,” said Regan.
“Irrespective of the outcome, there is a great opportunity for Scotland, either as the country as a whole or Glasgow putting its hat in the ring to be one of the host cities.
“Either option gives an opportunity for both Scotland and Glasgow.”
