November 25 – South Africa have turned down an approach to step in as emergency hosts of next year’s women’s African Cup of Nations finals after Congo pulled out.
It means the Confederation of African Football (CAF) are now in a race against time to find a country to hold the tournament.
Congo withdrew from hosting the 12-team event in July and the BBC says South Africa were contacted to step in.
“We are not going to express an interest on this. We are instead trying to focus our efforts on the 2023 women’s World Cup‚” the BBC quoted SAFA’s new acting chief executive officer Gay Mokoena as saying. “I will write to CAF to advise them that we will not express any interest to host this tournament.”
It means CAF now have to find new bidders for the tournament, which usually takes place in second half of the year.
South Africa are one of seven candidates seeking to host the 2023 women’s World Cup and have a December 13 deadline to submit detailed plans to FIFA.
