CAF fixtures clash squeezes club competitions to make space for CHAN

November 25 – African football has been hit by yet another club-versus-country fixture congestion issue.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) decided last week at its executive committee meeting in Cairo, that the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Cameroon, which exclusively features locally based players at African clubs, would take place from April 4-25.

That will mean a complete overhaul of the continent’s top two club competitions as no matches can be played at the same time as the CHAN finals

The group phase of both the African Champions League and African Confederation Cup will now have to be squeezed into just two months, which will also have a major impact on domestic leagues.

Having been stripped of hosting rights for this year’s Africa’s showpiece event, the African Cup of Nations, Cameroon were instead been handed the consolation prize of the 2020 CHAN  finals in place of Ethiopia.
