December 13 – Former Spain and Real Madrid striker Raúl says he wants to make a real contribution to football in Qatar ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which is why he chose to move to Doha-based club Al Sadd, who play in the Qatar Stars League.
The 35-year-old has been one of Europe’s top players over the last decade and is Real Madrid’s all-time top goal scorer having claimed 323 goals in 741 appearances.
He also has a record 44 goals in 102 appearances but eyebrows were raised when he decided to move to the virtually unknown Al Sadd in Doha earlier this year.
However, Raúl says he wants to contribute to the sport in the Middle East, where it is now receiving huge exposure following Qatar’s successful bid for the 2022 World Cup.
“I’m fully aware that Qatar are striving to become one of the leading sporting nations and they have big plans for football,” he said.
“Winning the honour of hosting the 2022 World Cup is the best possible proof of their intentions.
“That’s why I thought it was the right thing to get involved in this venture: I want to make a real contribution to their development.”
“As for the football itself, winning games, picking up trophies and giving spectators pleasure are the things that will help achieve these long-term goals.
“I’m looking for a new experience and I will work hard to ensure I take full advantage of my time here.”
Raúl says one of the key things he is trying to do in Qatar is to teach the younger players the importance of professionalism.
“Punctuality and showing respect in the workplace are the foundations of success,” he said.
“Success is meaningless without them.
“I’m always looking to pass these lessons on to younger players because they are the secret of excelling and developing your game.
“Of course my primary objective is to win games and titles, as well as writing a new chapter in footballing history out here.
“We’ll work hard and focus as hard as we can on the pitch to make this happen.”
