December 24 – American entrepreneur Jim Pallotta, (pictured) who became president of AS Roma on August 27, attended his club’s 4-2 conquest of AC Milan on Saturday. After the game he reinforced his commitment towards building a new stadium.

Speaking to RaiSport, Pallotta promised “there will be updates soon on the new stadium. The Olimpico is a super venue, and provides a phenomenal welcome for the team, but it is too old now.”

Roma currently share the Stadio Olimpico with Lazio.

A proposed new law to help clubs to build their own stadiums, rather than rent them from local municipalities, is bogged down in parliament and unlikely to progress.

The most promising location for the new stadium is in Tor di Valle, a southern district of the capital on the bank of the Tiber.

The new stadium will be a 60,000 seater to be designed by California-based Dan Meis. Meis has been responsible for the design of various American sports venues, most famously the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, and is also lead designer for Qatar’s 2022 Sport City Stadium.
