January 23 – Energy drink giants Red Bull, which already owns clubs in Germany, Austria, the USA and Brazil, are now reportedly targeting Brøndby, one of Denmark’s biggest teams where there is fierce opposition to the move.
Red Bull’s logo has become a familiar sight in Europe whenever Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg or high-flying RB Leipzig of the Bundesliga in Germany are in action.
But the idea of Red Bull Brøndby or Brøndby Red Bulls has not gone down well with local supporters of the 10-time Danish champions who are unimpressed at the prospect of being bankrolled by the Austrian company.
Factions of Brøndby support have urged their club to avoid any negotiations with Red Bull.
“Red Bull stands for everything we despise and all we have fought to not become,” the fans wrote. “If Red Bull gets involved with Brøndby IF, we will not be able to identify with the club as active fans any longer.”
“In Salzburg and Leipzig we can see how the Austrian money men have transformed real football clubs into pure business. They have changed logos, colours, stadium names … everything! We will never let that happen to our club.”
