January 8 – UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against Lazio following the Europa League tie against Tottenham Hotspur in November that was marred by anti-Semitic abuse from the home fans and violent attacks on Tottenham supporters outside a bar the night before the game.
Mocking Tottenham’s links with the Jewish community, a group of Lazio supporters chanted ‘Juden Tottenham’ (‘Jews Tottenham’ in German) when the game got under way and displayed a banner saying ‘Free Palestine’.
Tottenham have also been charged for a separate incident at the end of the game, with both cases to be discussed by UEFA’s Disciplinary Body on January 24.
UEFA has already fined Lazio €40,000 for racist chanting in the reverse fixture in London in September when monkey chants were directed at home players.
In a statement UEFA confirmed the charges against Lazio “relate to the alleged racist behavior” of their fans.
Proceedings will be instigated against the Italians “for throwing of missiles and/or fireworks by their supporters, incidents of a non-sporting nature, late team arrival at the stadium, and late handling of the team sheet.”
