January 31 – Transfer spending by English Premier League clubs in January increased from last year’s winter window following two major deals on the penultimate day of business.
Manchester United completed the biggest deal so far, signing Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon for £47 million, while Sheffield United brought in Norwegian midfielder Sander Berge from Belgian side Genk for a club record fee, reported to be £22 million.
With just one day remaining, the total outlay by top-flight clubs stood at £185.1 million, an increase from the £180 million spent last year, but a long way off the £430 million record from 2018.
Clubs across Europe, including in England and Scotland, cannot sign players after today until next summer though clubs can sign free agents in the meantime so long as they left their previous club before the winter transfer deadline.
Tottenham Hotspur were busy in making the loan signing of Real Betis midfielder Giovani lo Celso permanent for a fee of £27.2 million and also added winger Steven Bergwijn for £27 million from PSV Eindhoven after selling Christian Eriksen to Inter Milan for £16.9 million.
Elsewhere, Real Madrid spent £26 million on Flamengo youngster Reinier Jesus and Borussia Dortmund bought Red Bull Salzburg wonderkid Erling Braut Haaland for £17 million.
