May 27 – The average lifespan of a head coach at a top tier club anywhere in the world is just 40.6 games, according to new data from the CIES Football Observatory.
Bolivian club owners are the most trigger happy when it comes to firing coaches, with data showing the average number of coaches per club in charge for at least three domestic league matches at 9.1. Club Real Potosí employed 20 different coaches for at least three domestic league matches between 2015 and 2019. This compares to a club average of 2.6 in the less hot-headed climes of Sweden.
The CIES data covers 84 top divisions worldwide but only includes championships for which the researchers could find the complete coaching history for at least half of the clubs, with clubs only included if they had been in first division for the full duration of the period considered.
“Only 30 clubs out of the 766 taken into consideration employed a single coach during the five-year period studied. All current big-5 league teams had at least two coaches during this period,” finds the report.
Looking at Europe’s Big 5 leagues, Premier League clubs on average offer more job security that LaLiga clubs.
