French revolution gathers pace over decision to end season

May 29 – With Europe’s major leagues all stepping up plans to restart their seasons in the coming weeks, the exception is France which has not been lost on the country’s influential daily sports paper l’Equipe.

A number of French clubs have expressed their anger at the league being permanently terminated which has prompted a string of legal and financial ramifications.

French football has been cancelled even though lockdown restrictions have eased across the country and l’Equipe issued a front-page headline today which proclaimed “like idiots” to go with a cover story questioning the decision not to resume the season.

The article followed Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas’ furious reaction at the  news that the English Premier League is set to restart next month while the French authorities took the decision to cancel Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 back in April with 10 rounds of fixtures still to play.

Lyon ended up in seventh position, outside the European places, and Aulas is taking legal action against the decision to curtail the season prematurely. Having heard the Premier League news, he took to Twitter to make his feelings known tagging both the Prime Minister and the Sports Minister.
