Damaged image. Spanish taxman chases Ancelotti for unpaid €1m on hidden income

June 23 – Spain’s crackdown on tax evasion in football has snared yet another alleged culprit – Everton’s much-travelled manager Carlo Ancelotti.

The charge once again relates to tax due for image rights earnings, this time during the Italian’s time as Real Madrid boss in 2014-15 when, according to prosecutors, he failed to pay €1 million in taxes.

The Madrid Community Prosecutor’s office claims that tax declarations presented by Ancelotti concealed some of his income and that this had been done “with the intention of unreasonably evading his obligations to the public treasury”.

Ancelotti is yet to respond and Everton said they have no comment to make.

Ancelotti, in charge of Madrid from June 2013 until May 2015, has enjoyed an illustrious career during spells with AC Milan, Juventus, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

He was sacked by Madrid at the end of the 2014/15 season, a year after winning the Champions League with the club, and was named Everton manager in December last year

The latest allegations are the latest in a long line of cases  brought by Spanish authorities against star players and coaches in recent years, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi at the top of the list. In most cases large fines have been meted out but in some,  suspended jail sentences have been issued.
