March 5 – Egypt has started its league after a year’s suspension following the Port Said disaster where 74 fans were killed, but now the financial burden of sustaining clubs and playing squads looks to be hitting as players at one club are refusing to train.
The players of Alexandria-based Ittihad, the third most popular side in Egypt, refused to train this weekend over unpaid salaries as the club faces financial crisis
The players had been due to receive a payment towards what they are owed at the beginning of March – when this failed to materialise they refused to train.
The Egyptian league is split into two groups – with the Alexandria based club sitting one off the bottom of group B having played 4 matches. The club have won the Egyptian Cup six times in the past.
The club is scheduled to play Dakhleva in the league this evening.
The league restarted with matches being played behind closed doors because of fears of civil unrest.
