Neuer’s Nazi sing-a-long lands him in hot water

July 14 – Germany and Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer has hit the headlines after being filmed singing a controversial song about far-right nationalists while on holiday in Croatia.

Neuer, who has Croatian heritage, was filmed singing ‘Lijepa li si’ (You are beautiful) along with others at a social gathering. The song makes reference to an area of Bosnia-Herzegovina claimed by Croatian nationalists.

Neuer’s personal manager has told German newspaper Bild that the goalkeeper does not speak Croatian, so it remains uncertain whether he understood the words.

The song was written by Croatian folk singer Marko Perkovic, known for his sympathies for Croatia’s World War II pro-Nazi Ustasha regime that reportedly killed more than 100,000 people in concentration camps, most of them Serbs, Jews and Roma.
