NWSL numbers shatter records and put women’s league on the TV map

July 29 – Viewing figures from the US show record numbers for the women’s club game and a significant breakthrough for the NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League).

Sunday’s championship match between Houston and Chicago averaged 653,000 viewers on CBS – the most-watched match in NWSL history and up 293% over last’s year’s final.

Top TV markets were Norfolk, followed be Nashville, Houston, Chicago and West Palm Beach.

The number compare impressively both with women’s basketball and English Premier League coverage in the US.

The weekend basketball’s WNBA opening weekend on ESPN was the league’s most-watched opener on the ESPN family of networks since 2012, delivering an average 539,000 viewers.

Meanwhile NBC Sports’ coverage of the Premier League season averaged a Total Audience Delivery of 462,000 viewers per match window for the 2019-20 season –the highest average Premier League viewership since 2015-16, and up 1% from last year.
