CAF drops centralised Champions League finish in favour of home and away semis

August 4 – Following a meeting of its Emergency Committee, the African confederation (CAF) has revised dates and venues for its flagship Champions League and Total Confederation Cup club competitions.

Cameroon had been scheduled to host the CAF Champions League final four but the country pulled out over concerns about containing the spread of the coronavirus.

Instead CAF have decided not to host a centralised final four in one country but, because both semi-finals feature clubs from Egypt and Morocco, and to revert to home and away ties.

The competing teams are Al Ahly and Zamalek (Egypt) and Raja Club Athletic and Wydad Athletic Club (Morocco).

First leg matches will be played on September 25 and 26 in Morocco with second leg matches to be played on October 2 and 3 in Egypt.

CAF said “the final will be played at a neutral venue in the event a team from Egypt and Morocco qualify from the semis.”

The bidding process has been opened to Member Associations, excluding Egypt and Morocco, for the final hosting. In case the two Egyptian clubs or Moroccan clubs progress to the final, the one-off match will be played in either Egypt or Morocco with a proposed date of 16 or 17 October 2020.

Dates and venues for the completion of the Total Confederation Cup 2019/20 are:

Semi-finals

22.09.2020 – RS Berkane (Morocco) vs HUSA (Morocco) at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat
