2023 Women’s World Cup co-hosts Australia shortlist England’s Neville for head coach

August 11 – Phil Neville has been shortlisted for the role of head coach of Australia Women. In June, the English FA announced that his contract with England would not be extended.

World Cup-winning coach Jill Ellis and Arsenal Women manager Joe Montemurro are reportedly also on the list for the vacancy.

Neville led England to the Women’s World Cup semi-finals in France last year, but will leave his role with the team at the end of his contract in July 2021. Ellis and Dutch coach Sarina Wiegman are believed to be the frontrunners for the England job.

Last month, Ante Milicic stepped down from his role as the Australia women’s coach because of the delay to the Tokyo Olympics amid the Covid-19 pandemic. He led the Matildas to the last 16 of the World Cup, but he had agreed to coach A-League expansion club Macarthur FC in the 2020-21 season.

In a statement the FFA’s chief executive officer, James Johnson, said: “The unfortunate rescheduling of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to July-August next year has meant that a decision had to be reached. FFA and Ante agree that overseeing two elite teams is not a workable solution, with both programs deserving of, and requiring, complete focus.”
