March 19 – Almost three months after making worldwide headlines by walking off the pitch in protest at racism, AC Milan midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng will meet with FIFA president Sepp Blatter this week to discuss the best ways to fight discrimination and abuse.
The German-born Ghanaian international led the entire Milan team off the field after several players suffered abuse during a winter break friendly at lower-league Italian club Pro Patria, with the match subsequently being abandoned.
Blatter initially responded to Boateng’s gesture by praising his courage but questioning whether players walking off was the right kind of protest. He later made it clear that harsher sanctions had to be used to clamp down on racism.
Blatter has now invited Boateng to FIFA headquarters for an exchange of views and the pair will meet on Friday at lunchtime.
The visit of Boateng follows the creation of an anti-discrimination taskforce headed by CONCACAF president Jeffrey Webb and is due to convene first the first time during the current international week.
