August 28 – Manchester City who just avoided falling foul of the ‘buy now, pay later’ mentality when it won its CAS appeal against UEFA’s sanction for overspending and breaking its financial fair play rules, has somewhat appropriately signed a new financial sponsor who offers exactly that kind of consumer service.
The club has agreed a “multi-year regional partnership” with payment provider Laybuy who will become the Official Buy Now, Pay Later Partner for Manchester City in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. No value was given for the sponsorship whose contribution will help prevent the club from falling foul of UEFA’s FFP rules in the future.
Laybuy will look to integrate its ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ payment option on to all City’s platforms, including its retail offering.
Laybuy’s payment solution allows consumers to have more time to pay for purchases by spreading the cost of their buy into six interest-free weekly repayments.
The marketing campaign with a “new ‘Switch Play on How You Pay’ promotion featuring fan activations and the opportunity to reconnect with Manchester City Legends as they extend extra time on payments to extra time on the pitch for some of the Club’s most iconic legends,” said a Man City press release.
Stephan Cieplik, VP. Director of Partnerships APAC for Manchester City, commented: “Laybuy has quickly established a strong reputation in New Zealand and Australia and it is continuing to develop and grow into new markets. We’re looking forward to working with each other using our shared belief in technology and innovation to bring our partnership to life.”
Established in 2017, Laybuy is a leading buy now, pay later service partnering with more than 8,000 retail merchants globally.
Gary Rohloff, Co-Founder and Managing Director at Laybuy, said: “This is the first step of many in our bigger ambition to enable fans to fuel their love for their football clubs with innovative new payment options. This partnership perfectly reflects Laybuy and the Club’s shared values in ensuring football is as accessible as possible; keeping the community spirit alive by letting fans support their club to the fullest and stress free. We’re excited for what the future holds.”
