Rashford hungry for more action on child food poverty

September 1 – England international forward Marcus Rashford, who famously forced the British government into a u-turn over providing school food vouchers to pupils during the summer holidays, is now spearheading a campaign to end child hunger in the country.

Announcing a child food poverty task force, Rashford has now teamed up with the food industry’s major supermarket brands and has warned of “devastating” effects on the stability of the country if action is not taken quickly.

The Manchester United striker has written an open letter to  the government urging it to find the money to make changes “without delay”.

In a statement he said: “I’m proud and humbled to see such a reaction and commitment from the food industry, and I am confident that together we can help change the lives of those most vulnerable for the better.”

“I feel like at times people think they are being looked down on if they ask for help, and I think in this generation… that is something that should change,” Rashford told the BBC. “You should feel free if you want to ask for help… hold your head up high and, if you need help, go and get help.

“…we had to think about the best way to do it, to think about how these families can eat long term and not have issues. We wanted to do it the best way…introduce the best people into our group, and see if using them (we) can push it even more.”
