September 4 – The new French season has been plunged into further chaos after defending champions Paris St Germain announced three more positive cases of COVID-19 in their squad, 24 hours after unconfirmed reports that Brazilian superstar Neymar was one of them following a holiday in Ibiza.
The news puts PSG’s return to domestic action next week in doubt with six players now having returned positives across the last two rounds of screening. PSG are due to visit Lens on September 10, a game already pushed back at the request of the beaten Champions League finalists who were given an extended break.
A brief statement from the club said: “The latest tests for PCR SarsCoV2 carried out on the Paris Saint-Germain first team confirmed three new positive cases. The players are following the appropriate health measures.”
Under French league rules, if a club has four positive cases in their squad, their game has to be postponed.
That’s what happened to Marseille, whose clash with St Etienne on the opening day of the season had to be called off. Several other French clubs have been hit by the virus, including Montpellier, Rennes and Lyon.
