March 27 – As the Ralf Willi cartoon pictured here says, the referees take this seriously (personally) as well. FIFA is running a series of seminars for prospective referees and assistant referees in April in preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
An initial series of seminars was held in Zurich in September 2012. The programme is now being rolled out to be held in a county in each of the confederations.
The selected match officials are now being invited to attend a second seminar.
The seminars are focused on four main areas: protecting players and the image of the game; guarantee of decisional consistency and uniformity; “Reading the game” (technical/tactical approach); and understanding different football mentalities (knowledge of teams).
The seminars will be held in the confederations and are scheduled as follows:
CONCACAF in Fort Lauderdale (USA): 4 – 7 April
CONMEBOL in Asuncion (Paraguay): 9 – 12 April
UEFA in Zurich (Home of FIFA): 16 – 19 April
AFC & OFC in Dubai (UAE): 22 – 25 April
CAF in Casablanca (Morocco): 27 – 30 April
