September 15 – The Moroccan capital of Rabat has been confirmed as host of next year’s eagerly anticipated Confederation of African Football (CAF) presidential elections. What hasn’t is whether under-fire CAF current president Ahmad will stand again.
In a video press conference on Thursday, Ahmad, who has endured a torrid time in charge of CAF in the wake of a string of financial mismanagement and sexual harassment accusations, refused to be drawn on the issue.
“I am finalising with my team,” said the Malagasy. “Such a position in society in a continent is not about personal ambition, it is a commitment that is sought after by different interest groups.”
Candidates are able to apply up until November 12, with the elections themselves scheduled to take place exactly four months later.
It is anticipated that there will be a north African challenge whether or not Ahmad does stand.
Earlier this year, Egypt’s former CAF general secretary Amr Fahmy, who blew the whistle on the corrupt activities of Amhad, died of cancer at the age of 36 but shortly beforehand revealed he planned to try and unseat Ahmad by going for the region’s top job himself.
