October 26 – Barcelona’s 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in Saturday’s El Classico could shortly result in the entire board resigning according to Spanish reports.
Enough signatures have already been collected to end of the reign of Barca supremo Josep Maria Bartomeu in a no confidence vote next month, but reports suggest he could pre-empt that by falling on his sword in the next 24 hours – and could be followed by the rest of the board.
It has been a tumultuous 12 months for Barca who are now into their third manager of 2020 having sacked Ernesto Valverde in January, then his successor, Quique Setien, following that 8-2 humiliation by Bayern Munich in the Champions League in August which prompted Lionel Messi to ask for a move – later retracted because of legal ramifications.
The publication ‘Sport’ now reports Bartomeu “is prepared” to resign after today’s board meeting if the Catalan regional authorities confirm that the motion of no confidence against him can take place on November 1 and 2.
The current management wants it to be postponed but opponents of the board claim that is just a delaying tactic.
To make matters worse Real’s 3-1 weekend win puts them top of the fledgling La Liga table with 13 points from six games, six points above their arch-rivals.
