Concacaf to centralise final rounds of Champions League in US for December finish

November 3 – Concacaf is to centralise the final rounds of its Champions League with a final now schedule for December 22. The venue for the matches, which will be in the US, will be announced in the coming weeks.

The competition was suspended in March at the quarter final stage with three of the two-legged ties having been completed.

The second legs of those ties will open up the centralised match schedule on December 15 with the LAFC vs Cruz Azul match being a single leg tie. For the second leg matches, the games will be considered ‘home’ matches for the three teams which played their first leg away (CD Olimpia, Atlanta United FC and Tigres UANL) – the away goals rule will be applied if scores are level. If the LAFC vs Cruz Azul ends in a draw the game will go straight to penalties.

Semi-finals and final will also be played as single leg ties as opposed to the previous two-leg format.

“At Concacaf our focus in recent months has been to continue supporting our Member Associations and the wider football family during this challenging time, and on working hard to ensure we can resume our suspended competitions,” said Concacaf President and FIFA Vice President, Victor Montagliani.

“It has been extremely pleasing to see so many leagues across the region get back to playing football again and the time is right for our flagship club tournament, the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League, to return with the necessary protocols in place to ensure it is safe for everyone involved.
Concacaf said it has developed extensive new SCCL regulations to ensure the delivery of a safe and highly controlled environment for all the players, coaches, team staff and officials. These include a high-frequency COVID-19 testing regime before and during the competition.
