November 5 – Serie A giant Juventus has increased its club TV channel distribution making it available via Prime Video, the first club in Europe to TV channel available on the Amazon service.
Subscribers to Juventus TV currently do so via the clubs android or iOS apps, or the official club website. Launching on the Prime Video app in Italy as a standalone channel, subscriptions will cost €3.99 monthly as an addition to the basic Prime subscription.
Amazon has only just launched its Prime Video Channels streaming service in Italy and has been looking for content to drive subs. The channels feature that is already available in the US and in some European countries, launched with Juventus in Italy yesterday.
It marks a new step by the streaming service into the sports rights market and football in particular. Amazon has put a toe in the high priced premium football rights market with a deal for the Premier League.
The £90 million three-year package of Premier League matches sees the streaming of 10 matches over two mid-week nights on the Prime Video platform. Amazon said the first broadcasts in December 2019 delivered record numbers of sign-ups to the Prime subscription package since launch in 2007.
Adding the channel will likely open the opportunities for Europe’s other big clubs to expand the reach of their club channels which generally carry non-live content.
Amazon is also rumoured to be on the verge of securing a Champions League live rights package for Italy.
