Real Madrid and Barca head player development league, Man Utd and Arsenal in top 10

November 10 – Real Madrid (43), Barcelona (32) and Lyon (31) head a ranking of clubs in the Big 5 European leagues who have trained the most players active in 31 top divisions of UEFA member nations.

The research, by the CIES Football Observatory, counts training clubs are those where players have been for at least three seasons between the ages of 15 and 21. The researchers also weighted clubs by the number of games played by trained players, the sporting level they were at, and player age.

While Spanish clubs lead the ranking with seven in the top 20 (France’s Ligue 1 has six), in terms of numbers of players trained, Serbian side FK Partizan tops the table ahead of AFC Ajax (77) and Dinamo Zagreb (71).

“Benfica, Ajax and Barcelona recorded the top weighted scores for the training of players in the 31 European top divisions, while Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris St-Germain are at the top of the weighted rankings with regard to footballers currently active in the five major European championships,” find the report authors.
