English authorities covid-clear Iceland to travel for Wembley game

November 13 – England’s Nations League match against Iceland next week is no longer under threat after the government staged a u-turn over its travel ban and granted special dispensation to the visitors.

Iceland play Denmark in Copenhagen on Sunday and would ordinarily have been prohibited from entry into the UK because of a new coronavirus strain that has spread from Danish mink to humans.

But following an update to its travel corridor list, the government said it would allow “a limited exemption for a small number of Danish and Icelandic national football players to travel from the UK to Copenhagen and back, without the need to self-isolate”.

In a plea to the government on Thursday morning the FA had argued strongly against taking the game to a neutral venue which is allowed under UEFA rules.

The government capitulated but its latest u-turn sparked anger amongst some in the community since British nationals but must undergo 14 days mandatory self-isolation if they are arriving from Denmark.
