Liverpool goalkeeping legend Ray Clemence dies, aged 72

November 16 – Former England, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Ray Clemence, who won every major European and domestic honour, has died aged 72.

Clemence played 61 times for England and he made over 450 appearances in 14 years at Liverpool before switching to Spurs.

In all, he won five top-flight league titles, three European Cups and two UEFA Cups with Liverpool while at Spurs he added another UEFA Cup and FA Cup to his trophy cabinet.

Clemence, who had reportedly been living with advanced prostate cancer since 2005, was one of the greatest English goalkeepers of his generation, constantly rivalling Peter Shilton for the No. 1 jersey.

England players wore black armbands during their Nations League game in Belgium on Sunday and will pay tribute to Clemence before Wednesday’s match against Iceland at Wembley.
