Trippier told pals to ‘lump on’ and back his move to Atletico with bookies

January 6 – The English Football Association has provided fresh details of why it handed international defender Kieren Trippier a 10-game ban for breaching betting rules.

Trippier’s club, Atletico Madrid, has reacted furiously to the decision and FIFA have stepped in to block the ban pending an appeal with the Spanish club arguing the punishment hits them rather than the English national side.

The FA says Tripper encouraged a friend to “lump on” money with bookmakers on him joining Atletico from Tottenham Hotspur in 2019.

The exchange was detailed in the written reasons for the FA’s decision to hand Trippier the 10-week worldwide suspension. The England right-back was also fined £70,000 after being found guilty last December.

The written reasons published contained a series of WhatsApp messages exchanged between Trippier and various friends who ultimately placed a number of bets from £20 to £300 on the transfer to Atletico.

The Football Association’s independent regulatory commission commission rejected Trippier’s assertion that the messages were just “banter”.

Trippier’s good disciplinary record, character and the remorse he showed were also factors in determining the sanction, the commission said
